Native Works

Takoja Niwiciyape: Giving Life to the Grandchildren, is a culturally-specific, family-based program designed to prevent alcohol, drug, suicide, crime, and violence problems among youth and families in Indian country. Participants learn skills, tools, and resources that apply Dakota/Lakota values, understand cultural/ tribal history, explore wicozani (the good way of life), and how to draw strength from family and community “relatives.” They learn appropriate forms of help seeking, dealing with anger and discrimination, forgiveness, problem solving, positive friendships, and refusal skills. Takoja Niwiciyape focuses less on problems and more on healthy, respectful living.

FamilyThe program was built from a Dakota/Lakota/Nakota cultural perspective. Adaptation to other tribes and cultures is possible. Contact the Foundation for Family Life for more information.
